Portabela, Panama

Portabela is rich in history with much of it surrounding Captain Henry Morgan and his crew who tried to sack this town more than once and finally succeeded by trickery or shrewdness, you pick. As the story goes  his ships entered the harbor while 200 men on the ground fought the jungles and came up on the backside of the town to set fire to most of the dwellings to get at the large storage building that held the gold and valuables stored waiting for the transport ships to take the loot back to Spain. These treasures where brought by mule train and men's back from the Pacific side of Panama through the jungles and housed in the storehouse.
This is the storage building with walls about 4 feet thick. There is a museum downstairs that has a posted admittance sigh advertising ticket prices. Adults $3 and tourists $4. We bargained and got in for the adult price. The display was well done including a great video dealing with the history of the town.
One of 3 forts constructed to protect the town and Kings or Queens money. The ships had to face a huge barrage of canon fire to actually force a landing. Canon balls coming at them from 3 directions, must have been fun!
The storage building just one street in form the waters edge.
This fort faced the entrance to the town with the storage building on it's right.
An entry point to the fort with the storage building behind.
 The guard monkey watching.
A bad life for a jungle animal, but I'm happy to say she broke out of her bondage and went back to the jungle.
What you'd see as you approached the landing area.
The storage building in the background, canons in front.
The wooden frames have rotted away, but you still get the idea of what a canoneer had to look forward to to protect the public.
Many canons, must have required very many men to attend to the duties during an attack.
The line up, come and get the gold.
Some detail of the powder room which is located underground and fully accessible to the adults.
